Prostitution in Guatemala
In Guatemala, it was the first time any form of sexual violence during a conflict had been settled in court. Many women and children are brought into the country from El SalvadorNicaraguaand Honduras by organized rings that force them into prostitution. According to ECPAT, the incidents of trafficking in persons and the sale of children for sexual exploitation have likely increased due to higher unemployment rates and increasing numbers of individuals living in extreme poverty. There are about 10, cases of reported rape per year, but the total number is likely much higher because of under-reporting due to social stigma. The justice system is limited for people who do not speak Spanish.
